Study permit

A study permit is a document that authorizes an individual to pursue their studies in Canada.

Temporary residence visa

A temporary residence visa is a stamp on your passport that authorizes you to enter Canada for study, work, or visiting purposes.

Co-op work permit

A co-op work permit allows you to undertake internships, which are usually required to successfully complete certain programs. Note that not all programs require internships.

Post-graduation work permit

The post-graduation work permit (PGWP) is a type of open work permit that allows students who have graduated from an eligible Designated Learning Institution (DLI) to work and gain Canadian experience. The experience gained while on a PGWP counts towards your application for permanent residence in Canada, provided it is in a TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3 occupation.

When can I travel to Canada after my study visa gets approved?
There is no specific timeframe mandated for your arrival in Canada before the start of your studies. It is advisable to arrive with enough time to settle in and prepare adequately before your program begins. NOTE: You are not permitted to work on or off-campus until your studies have officially started in Canada.

When do I need to inform UNF about my study permit approval?
You should report your study permit approval to UNF 28 days before the start of your term.

I just extended my study permit. Do I need to renew my study visa as well?
No, you’re not required to renew your study visa after extending your study permit. However, if you plan to travel internationally or return to your home country and then re-enter Canada, it is strongly recommended that you renew your temporary resident visa before traveling.

What documents do I need before traveling to Canada?
You need a valid passport, letter of introduction, a letter of acceptance, proof of funds, possibly a temporary resident visa (TRV) or electronic travel authorization (eTA), and other documents that are specific to your case.

How do I find accommodation in Canada?
You can choose from on-campus housing, off-campus housing, homestays, or private rentals. It’s best to arrange accommodation before you arrive. Learn more about Housing Services on our Housing Website.

What should I pack for my stay in Canada?
Pack weather-appropriate clothing, personal documents, medications, and any necessary electronic devices. Don’t forget adapters for Canadian outlets.

What should I do when I first arrive in Canada?
Complete customs and immigration procedures, get your study permit at the port of entry, arrange transportation to your accommodation, and attend your institution's orientation on the scheduled date.

How do I open a bank account in Canada?
Visit a local bank with your passport, study permit, letter of acceptance, and proof of address to open a student bank account.

How do I get a Canadian phone number?
You can get a SIM card from a Canadian mobile provider or purchase a prepaid phone plan upon arrival. UNF international students receive exclusive deals with our partner, CanadianSIM. With CanadianSIM, your SIM card can be delivered to you prior to your travels to Canada, ensuring you are ready to connect as soon as your step foot off the plane. View package deals on their website, canadiansim.com/unfc

Can I work while studying in Canada?
If you are in a degree program, you can work on-campus or off-campus for up to 24 hours per week during academic sessions and full-time during scheduled breaks.

If you are in a preparatory program, you cannot work off-campus.

How can I get a Social Insurance Number (SIN)?
If you have the required conditions on your study permit, you can apply for a SIN at an airport Service Canada desk, online or at a Service Canada office.

SIN clinics are held on UNF campus in the first month of each term where a Service Canada staff will issue you a SIN on the spot. Check the UNF Campus Events Calendar for details.

What do I need to apply for a SIN?
You need the following documents:

  • Study permit which indicates the permit holder “may accept employment” or “may work” in Canada
    • Proof of identity (passport, any Canadian government-issued ID)

If I am authorized to work on my study permit, do I still need my co-op work permit?
Yes, you do need a co-op work permit to complete your work related program component. The conditions on your study permit that allow you to work off campus do not apply to mandatory work placements or internships related to your studies. If your program requires a placement or internship and you do not have a valid co-op work permit, you should apply for one right away.

Are there scholarships available for international students?
Yes, the Office of the Registrar has dedicated more than $15 million in scholarships, awards, and financial support to undergraduate and graduate students studying at the University of Niagara Falls Canada. Visit our Scholarships and Awards page for more information.

How can I get career support?
Utilize our UNF Career Centre that offers one-on-one and group career advising, appointments, and career workshops on editing your resume, cover letters, and preparing for an interview. Visit the Career Services for more information.

Can I start my own business?
If you’d like to start your own business in Ontario, please see Start a Business in Ontario for helpful resources. International Student Advising is not able to provide advice on taxes or setting up a business.

If you are self-employed, be sure to track your hours of work. Be careful not to work more hours than you are authorized to.

How can I make friends and get involved on campus?
There are many ways a student at UNF can make friends and get involved. Join or create a club, become a student leader, and attend events hosted by the Student Success Office. Participate in orientation programs and connect with fellow students through social media and campus activities.  See the Clubs, Groups, and Community page for more information.

What are some cultural differences I should be aware of?
Canada is known for its politeness, diversity, and inclusiveness. Punctuality, respect for personal space, and queuing are important aspects of Canadian culture.
