How interactive is the online learning delivery format for students?

UNF’s online learning experience is designed to be engaging even in a fully asynchronous format. While there are no scheduled class times, courses incorporate interactive elements such as moderated discussion forums, regular instructor-led feedback on assignments, peer review activities, multimedia coursework, and structured learning modules that encourage active participation and critical reflection. These elements mirror institutional practices that enhance interaction in asynchronous environments.

How often do students engage with classmates in the online program, including discussion boards, group projects, and live sessions?

Although UNF’s programs are 100% asynchronous, most courses provide weekly discussion boards and collaboration spaces where students regularly post, respond to peers, and engage with course themes. Some courses may also include optional group activities or peer review assignments designed to foster dialogue and shared learning at flexible times. This approach aligns with broader online learning practices where discussion boards and group tasks support community building. All online programs also have an online program hub which allows for broader engagement with peers, faculty across the program, and educational support professionals to support you in your learning, connect you to industry events and opportunities, and enhance your level of community across the program.

How frequently can students communicate or meet with instructors in an online program?

Students can communicate with instructors throughout the term using the learning platform’s messaging tools, email, drop-in office hours, and course discussion threads. Instructors maintain a presence by providing regular feedback, answering questions, connecting you to helpful industry information and resources, and guiding learning progression. Regular instructor engagement is considered a best practice in online education and helps ensure timely academic support.

Are live online lectures recorded and available for students to replay?

In fully asynchronous formats, live lectures are not scheduled. Instead, course content is delivered through best practice online content development based on guiding you through the content of the course using narrated content involving multimedia tools, technological interactives, self-guided learning inventory checks, videos, and automated reality driven interactive tools where relevant. To ensure that UNF online students receive the same applied focus as our in-person programs our model is focused on you being able to engage and apply your learning to the content rather than receive one-dimensional recordings of to understand on your own. Within your course you will be guided through your learning and into application to ensure that you can connect your learning to the real world.

What level of instructor and academic support is available for online learners?

UNF students receive comprehensive academic support throughout their studies. Instructors and academic advisors provide detailed feedback, guidance on course content, and support for academic planning. This reflects similar supports available at other Canadian institutions, where asynchronous courses are paired with robust faculty engagement, responsive communication, and structured academic oversight.

Are virtual office hours or one-to-one support sessions available for online students?

Yes, our online programs offer virtual office hours and individual support sessions via video conferencing or messaging tools. These are scheduled to accommodate learners in different time zones and provide opportunities for personalized academic guidance, concept clarification, and coursework support. Virtual office hours help bridge the asynchronous experience with direct access to instructors.

What platforms and technologies are used to deliver online learning, including learning management systems and virtual classrooms?

UNF uses a robust learning management system (LMS) – Cascade (a D2L Brightspace system), that serves as the central hub for course and program access, assignments, communication, and collaboration. This system includes tools for accessing your course content, engaging with course materials, submitting work, participating in discussion boards, tracking progress, and connecting with instructors, academic support, and peers.
