University of Niagara Falls Canada and the Niagara SPCA & Humane Society (NSPCAHS) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) that establishes a formal cooperative framework between the two organizations.

Announced June 30, the agreement reflects a shared commitment to advancing animal care education, strengthening community engagement, and creating meaningful learning opportunities for students and professionals interested in animal health and welfare.

The MoU lays the groundwork for a broad range of collaborative initiatives, with a particular focus on enriching the educational experiences of students enrolled in UNF's Honours Bachelor of Science in Bioveterinary Science program. Through the partnership, the organizations will explore opportunities to integrate real-world animal care experiences into academic training through engagement at NSPCAHS shelters, adoption centres, and veterinary clinics.

Announced earlier this year, UNF’s HBSc Biovet degree combines foundational biological sciences with cutting-edge digital technology. It prepares graduates for a future in veterinary medicine or advanced research. The four-year undergraduate program is delivered on-site at its downtown campus with intakes in Fall (late September), and Winter (January).

Among the key areas of collaboration identified in the MoU is experiential learning. Students may have opportunities to participate in observational placements, volunteer experiences, and other hands-on learning activities within NSPCAHS facilities. These experiences will provide valuable exposure to animal care environments while complementing classroom and laboratory instruction.

“This partnership reflects our commitment to preparing students for careers that make a real difference for animals, for communities, and for the professionals who serve them. We are proud to work alongside the Niagara SPCA & Humane Society to bring to life beyond the classroom,” said Janine Gray, Associate Dean, Biosciences at UNF.

"The Niagara SPCA & Humane Society is pleased to partner with the University of Niagara Falls Canada to foster and advance the development of the next generation of animal health and welfare professionals,” said Amelia Canto, Chief Executive Officer, NSPCAHS.

The partnership also opens the door to the development of micro-credentials and continuing education opportunities focused on animal care, guest lectures and knowledge-sharing initiatives, collaborative research opportunities, and joint community outreach and awareness programs.

Together, UNF and the NSPCAHS will explore innovative ways to connect education, animal welfare, and community service while creating pathways for students to gain valuable industry experience.

One of Ontario’s largest and most active animal welfare organizations, NSPCAHS serves communities across eight municipalities in Niagara through five animal centres, including shelters, adoption hubs, a wellness clinic, and its low-cost spay/neuter clinic. The organization provides animal sheltering, adoption, veterinary care, rehabilitation, public education, and animal control services.
