University of Niagara Falls Canada has launched a public call for artists to submit design concepts for a new ceremonial object that will play a central role in its Convocation ceremonies, beginning with its inaugural ceremony in spring 2026.

The Request for Proposals (RFP) invites professional artists and designers to create a concept that reflects the university’s values, its commitment to innovation, and its connection to the community it serves. The selected design will become a signature element of Convocation and will be used each year as part of the formal academic procession.

"This is a meaningful opportunity to help shape a new tradition,” said Felica Werner, Executive Director of Community and Alumni Engagement. “As we prepare for our first Convocation, we’re looking for a piece that honours the significance of the moment while representing the forward-looking spirit of the university.”

Artists working in a range of disciplines are invited to submit concepts that demonstrate thoughtful artistic vision, strong craftsmanship, and an understanding of the significance of ceremonial traditions within a Canadian university context.

The selected artist will collaborate with UNF to refine the design and produce a durable, meaningful object that will be used at future convocation ceremonies, beginning with our first graduating class in spring 2026.

What we’re looking for:

  • Original, standalone design that reflects the university’s values and regional character
  • Distinctive, timeless aesthetic appropriate for formal academic ceremonies
  • Must be light enough to carry comfortably in a ceremonial procession
  • Final dimensions should not exceed 61 cm in height and 30.5 cm in width

The deadline for submission is noon on Dec. 31, 2025.

“We want this piece to be both symbolic and enduring,” said Werner. “Convocation marks a milestone for every graduate. This object will help define how we celebrate that moment for generations to come.”
